Aquinas has been blessed by the breadth and depth of students who have walked our halls, each contributing to the tradition we so value. Some have graced us with their presence for too short a time. In their memory and in honor of the AQ tradition they valued, family and friends have established annual golf tournaments. We invite you to consider participating in the following events.
Steve Centron '70 Picnic and Golf Tournament
This event is held annually in September. Mr. Centron was a 1970 graduate of Aquinas Institute, where he excelled in football, basketball and track and field. Mr. Centron graduated from the University of Rochester in 1974 with a BA in literature. Upon graduation, he came back to Aquinas as an English teacher and coach, until his untimely death, due to a car accident, on Christmas Eve 1977. At that time, a scholarship fund was established by generous friends, colleagues, and family of Mr. Centron. All proceeds benefit the Steven P. Centron ’70 Scholarship at Aquinas.
Andrew Laughlin Golf Tournament
Andrew Laughlin was a 2003 graduate of Aquinas Institute. Many faculty members remember him fondly as a young man of exemplary character, with a passion for football and boxing. He overcame physical obstacles to play the sports he loved, and demonstrated the discipline and hard work required to achieve academic success. Andy neither identified as an athlete or a student, but as a member of a community called Aquinas, where he was loved for his simplicity, humor, strength, compassion and honesty. Proceeds from this annual event benefit the Aquinas Scholarship Fund.
Kory Schramm Invitational Golf Tournament
Kory Schramm graduated from Aquinas in 1999 and left a legacy of inspirational memories to all who knew him. A model student in the classroom and a standout athlete in every sport in which he participated, Kory passed away unexpectedly in 2004. Kory touched everyone around him and was truly an “Aquinas Man.” Proceeds benefit the Aquinas Scholarship Fund.
The Trooper Foundation Golf Tournament
Andrew “AJ” Sperr ’91 was an Aquinas Mission Bout heavyweight champion many referred to as “The Gentle Giant.” Andy earned his Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement at Monroe Community College, and in 1996, became a New York State Trooper. Ten years later on March 1, 2006, Andy’s life came to an untimely end during a “routine” traffic stop following a bank robbery that took place minutes earlier. Before succumbing to his injuries, Andy managed to exchange fire with his killers, resulting in their ultimate capture and imprisonment. Since his heroic death, the New York State Police, Troop E, have held an annual golf tournament in his memory, providing annual scholarships to several schools Andy attended, including the AJ Sperr `91 Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Aquinas. For details about the Trooper Foundation Golf Tournament, please contact First Sgt. Tim Coughlin at (585) 398-4140.
